On the chance this is a serious question...

In my case, I made a few edits, asked if I was doing certain additions correctly, reviewed the policies, and made probably five years of constructive edits before being approached.

The most important thing is to ask questions if you don't understand something, the worst you can get is "no / we're not doing this" in forms that will vary by person and situation.
