Dragon Ball Super

Postby kidcuda » Wed Oct 26, 2016 9:06 am

This is more like an inquiry than a request: Since Super will now start official streaming on Crunchyroll and other services, some of their episode titles have changed.

For example the latest episode was translated as "Don't Defile the Saiyan Cells! The Curtain Rises on Vegeta's Battle!!" http://thetvdb.com/?tab=episode&seriesid=295068&seasonid=666099&id=5763104&lid=7

Crunchyroll (with the official English subs) has it as "Don't Disrespect Saiyan Cells! Vegeta's Heroic Battle Begins!!" http://www.crunchyroll.com/dragon-ball-super/episode-63-dont-disrespect-saiyan-cells-vegetas-heroic-battle-begins-722895

Did we want to change these to the more updated English titles since it is the official simulcast, or wait for the actual US dub (possibly?) They haven't released the rest of the series yet, so I'd imagine this would be a multi week process.

Could Seasons 1 & 2 be unlocked just for the purpose of renaming the episodes at stated above?

My understanding is that Seasons 1 & 2 are using the first licensed English titles, rather than direct translations. Seasons 3 & 4 still have the direct translations, so they're currently unlocked for updating.

Just to further clarify, the order of titles from least to most accurate would be:

  • Romanji (Romanization of Japanese)
  • Direct (often fan) translations from Japanese to English (found on many approved/trusted sources)
  • Webstream titles from a service such as Crunchyroll or Anime News Network. (sometimes provided by the distributor, but not always)
  • First official licensed English title from the authorized DVD/BluRay source. (this would not necessarily be superseded by a later source such as a re-release)

Note: In rare cases the name of the series or its episodes are already in English for the Japanese release. We wouldn't require these to be updated upon licensing, but sometimes it happens.
