So essentially someone (re)numbered the early episodes January - December, when they should be September - July (roughly). And they didn't delete duplicate episodes. My, what a mess.

That's as far as I got into it, too.
I've got your back for any removals / relocates that need to happen.

Thanks. My experience from cleaning up and adding Dateline episodes is that it's going to be easiest if the Dupe episodes are deleted first, so that stuff can be moved around easier.

Request: Delete these episodes so that cleanup can begin.

Props to DarklightIndigo! It appears they have made all of the proposed changes. No doubt this took time to fix.

One last dupe I noticed that needs to be cleaned up:

4 x 20 The Green Machine 1978-01-11
5 x 2 The Green Machine 1978-01-11

4x20 is probably the one that should be deleted

Thanks to f8andbethere for the updates.

I also sent a question about NOVA episodes via email to [email protected]. Response was as follows :

Thank you for reaching out to NOVA. NOVA’s seasons correspond to the calendar year. Right now we are in Season 44, 2018

will be Season 45, and so on. There are also program numbers assigned to each episode which correspond to the season. For

example the first episode of Season 44, which premiered on 1/4/17, has the number 4401.

Based on link previously provided (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/listseason/) which lists all Nova episodes by year up to 2007, I requested additional info for years 2008 to current. I will forward info/response as soon as it becomes available.

If this is accepted, it will mean editing Season and Episode # for approximately 370 episodes. I also found a couple of episodes that were missing and others that needed to be merged or deleted, but this was before all the recent updates. I'll review and compare again soon.

All this being said, it appears to me that the only reliable source of information concerning NOVA episodes is at the PBS site above. I hope this doesn't further confuse the issue, but since I found info on Wiki page much easier to read when compared to info at PBS I made an initial effort to compare episode info from PBS link to info on Wikipedia page. I know we aren't supposed to rely on Wiki, but it also served to corroborate info on PBS site :

PBS Site : http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/listseason/
Wiki site : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nova_episodes

Code: Select all

Using the info under "Code" column on Wiki as Season/Episode (SSEE) AND ignoring the group headers of "Season #:YYYY" I've found Wiki to be "mostly" correct with the following observations :

In some cases, Wiki uses TBA or Special as Code info. Also, not all seasons have sequential Code data.  You might have a range of Codes 1801 thru 1820, but no 1813. You need to use air date and common sense to come up with season.

Season 9/1982 - Wiki does NOT include re-airing of very 1st NOVA episode  (Making of a Natural History Film) as a separate episode.  PBS lists this re-airing on 1/4/83 as an additional episode.

Season 22/1995 - PBS does NOT include five episodes of "Mystery of the senses.  I think they should be included as NOVA episodes, based on broadcast date and other info at
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/education/programs/22s1_hearing.html
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/education/activities/22s2_smell.html
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/education/programs/22s3_taste.html
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/education/activities/22s4_touch.html
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/education/programs/22s5_vision.html

Season 26/1999 - Wiki lists "everest: mystery of mallory and irvine" on 10/6/99; this appears to be dupe of "lost of everest" on 1/18/2000…see link at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/everest/lost/ which references "lost on everest"

Season 31/2004 - Wiki lists the Origins episodes individually, PBS only has one entry for the mini-series.

Season 32/2005 - PBS includes 4 Nova scienceNOW episodes.

Season 33/2006 - PBS includes 3 Nova scienceNOW episodes.

Season 34/2007 - PBS list is incomplete, only listing three episodes.

Season 35/2008 and beyond - no info available or found on PBS/Nova site.

Hope this long message hasn't been too confusing. Let me know what you think.

Thanks....winger

I noticed this exact issue today when I realized my PVR wasn't recording the newest episode because the recording should have be S44E11 but since thetvdb lists "Ultimate Cruise Ship" as the 11th episode and that's already downloaded that means it shouldn't be recorded.

It seems to me that along with the resources you've listed, simply following the programming code on theTVDB should give us the actual season and episode number. I'd be willing to help with updating these since it will definitely fix my current programming nightmare now and into the future.

I just reviewed the "resolved" thread, and it doesn't look resolved at all to me. I didn't properly read forum rules and responded to it, but really the reply should go here, so I deleted and moved it to below:

It looks like the most recent seasons are still not correct at least based on the pbs website and the tvguide links from earlier in this thread. There seems to be a disconnect between the 'production code' and the actual episode numbers. Sources seem to list the season based on TV year (fall - spring) rather than Nova's listed year which seems to be based on the calendar.

For instance, the TVDB lists S44E01 as "15 Years of Terror" which has the production code of 4316. The 43 numbers go up through the end of 2016. The first episode of 2017 is listed on TVDB as S44E08 but it has the production code of 4401.

Jumping to the end of season 44, "Eclipse Over America" is listed as Season 44 Episode 11 on the PBS website: http://www.pbs.org/video/eclipse-over-america-kgrjsk but theTVDB lists it as episode 18.

I don't know if Nova changed their numbering at any point, but it looks like the official number goes based on calendar year which makes theTVDB and IMDB incorrect in their listing but the tvguide list accurate: http://www.tvguide.com/tvshows/nova/191695/.

My problem with all this is how it affects PVRs. I only noticed this because my PVR failed to record episode 11 "Eclipse Over America" because it thinks I already have it recorded because I have "Ultimate Cruise Ship" recorded from earlier in the year. This is going to lead to a nightmare trying to get these properly recording forever unless theTVDB can be updated to follow what's actually being released by PBS. I'm happy to help with any changes in regard to this if needed as well since it greatly affects my future recording efforts.
