Changes to split-cour anime

Postby ManiacB » Thu Aug 20, 2015 9:14 am

In recent years, anime studios have begun to air some series in what is known as a "split cour" format. This is where half of the series is aired one season, followed by a break (typically one season), followed by the second half. Up until recently, we have typically treated each "cour" as its own season on TheTVDB, however after some internal discussion and in an effort to apply consistent policies across as many series as possible, series like this will now be treated as a single season.

We already treat other, non-anime series in this way, although they are typically referred to as mid-season breaks instead. Some examples of this some seasons of Breaking Bad, Futurama, South Park, Mad Men, and many more.

Another telling fact is that the official sites for most of these split-cour series list the episodes as 1-24, further reinforcing that this was always a single "season" with a broadcast break midway through.

I have made retroactive changes to some anime series that I personally know aired in a split-cour format. Please post below if I have missed any and I will make the changes.

Series Changed
Fate/Zero (S2 merged into S1)
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works (S2 merged into S1)
Durarara (S3 merged into S2)
Jormungand (S2 merged into S1)
Space Dandy (S2 merged into S1)
Aldnoah.Zero (S2 merged into S1)
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012) (S3 merged into S2)
The [email protected] Cinderella Girls (S2 merged into S1)
Mushishi (S3 merged into S2) - This one was done a while ago
Black Lagoon (S2 merged into S1)

Series Not Changed
For these series, the episode numbering (both on the episodes themselves and the official site), TV schedule information and several other resources all consider the second half to be a second season in its own right.
Chaika the Coffin Princess
Silver Spoon

I will leave this post as a sticky for a few weeks, after which time any further changes can be requested in the normal manner.

About Durarara, I think nothing has been said about a third season so far, so I'm fairly certain you're referring to the next batch of episodes (starting in Jan. 2016) which are the third and final part of the second season since it's named Durarara!!x2 Ketsu and was announced alongside the other two.

Here some shows that I watched that are split on TVDB but not on other sites (mainly the official ones). None of these are very strong candidates for a merge but I thought I'd point them out in case you want to add them to the list of shows that won't be merged or something.

Valvrave The Liberator, I couldn't find any news about it (a lot of shows don't advertise the split-cour) but the official site lists the episodes as 1-24 even though the second half was promoted as season 2. http://www.valvrave.com/story/ http://aniplexusa.com/valvrave/story/index.html
It seems to be commonly accepted by anime fans that it was a split-cour from the start (it's a mecha show from Sunrise).

Birdy The Mighty Decode and Moonlight Mile are said to have been split-cours (both shows aired a "second season" after a 1 season break in spite of not being popular or helping their respective mangas much) but I couldn't find the episode lists in their official sites. Both shows' "complete series" DVDs list the episodes as 1-26 instead of 2 12-episode seasons.

Yeah I think you're right. I must have misread the information when I looked previously. Thanks for that.

I'll have a look into the other series you've mentioned.

It's an oldie but I think this should apply to Gantz as well.

Between Gonzo, Shochiku, and Fuji/AT-X, didn't they go way out of their way to claim that 08-26 was legitimately a second season?

There's a bunch of articles there that seem to reflect that.

Don't think it should count since they used the name Gantz 2nd Stage. Being listed under one show with two seasons is fine.

Yeah Gantz is an odd one. Doesn't help that you have episodes that were cut or only re-broadcast much later ><

Under that logic you could argue for Black Lagoon as well, but I think the main point here is removing of non-seasons where unless specifically noted by the airing network anime is split in the middle of a season where we wouldn't do the same for a live action series.

Quite possible, though I think it's obvious that the season break was an odd point to break the story up. It was very artificial as season 1 and 2 are a continuous story arc.

Might take up until next month for the actual episode numbers but "Seraph of the End" has always been announced split cour:
