Using YouTube thumbnails for WebSeries

Postby elebe11y » Tue Jul 10, 2018 1:27 am

I recently made a post inquiring about copyright policies. However, I think I asked a bit too many questions, no one seems to have bothered to respond.

One of the more important questions I wanted answered was, are we allowed to use thumbnails of YouTube videos from official YouTube channels to use as episode screenshots for webseries entries?

They do seem to be covered by Fair Use, but the preference is for episode images, not title cards.

What? So, we shouldn't use them? 'Cause I've uploaded 50 for a webseries.

"But the preference is for episode images, not title cards"???
What's a title card? "The preference is for episode images", as in not video thumbnails?

I misread what you said. So, it's okay to use them.

What do you mean by "the preference is for episode images, not title cards"? Did you mean to say, "The preference is for episode screenshots, not thumbnails"?

Also, is it also under fair use to use the descriptions in the description boxes to use for episode overviews? And to use descriptions on their playlists in their channel for series/season overviews?

The images should be images from the episode, not images that also contain the episode or series title as that is redundant with the text field(s) that provide this information separately.

Oh, I see. No these images don't contain any text.

Are we allowed to use the descriptions?

Answered in your other thread, we'd prefer original interpretations to ensure they're permanent, but under ordinary circumstances, yes you may use those descriptions.
