Stop Prepending Series Names With The Name Of The Station...

Postby hikaricore » Sat Mar 26, 2011 7:53 pm

I just want to remind everyone again of a simple concept which seems to elude a lot of you...

THE DAMN STATION A SERIES AIRS ON DOES NOT BELONG IN THE TITLE FFS.

You wouldn't add a series called "NBC The Cape" or "TBS Psych" or even "CBS How I Met Your Mother" so why in the hell do people add things like "National Geographic: World's Deadliest" and "Discovery Channel: Ancient Rome"... it's like everyone who watches shortrun documentary series is suffering from a yet unnamed mental handicap.
Seriously... look at this shit:

http://thetvdb.com/index.php?string=Nat ... ion=Search
http://thetvdb.com/index.php?string=Dis ... ion=Search

There are about 6 entries between these two searches that actually need National Geographic and Discovery Channel in their title who wants to take a guess at what they are? Nevermind the fact that people are still adding single episode documentaries as their own series entry... this is just one more stupid thing we have to deal with every single day and aside from making me want to stab babies, it also greatly contributes to the number of duplicates on the site. So please please please when you add a series take a good look at the actual name of the thing and be sure you're entering it properly. This has been a public service announcement for the dismemberment of asshats who can't be bothered to do things in a logical fashion.

*note* This rant is totally unrelated to series aliases, sorry manekineko.

I have a way of addressing this on the new site. It should also address the country of origin vs year "debate", along with some other possible issues we haven't seen people make a fuss over yet. :)

erm... some of them were actually aliases I added while working on the NatGeo mess, specifically to try and keep people from adding duplicates while I was trying to make sense of the convoluted mess I found and making things a lot easier when working with like 60 opened browser tabs on two screens simultaneously.
I deleted the ones I did as they were never meant to stay around, but no, it doesn't make that much of a difference.
If there are no objections, I can take care of the rest -- seems like I have to handle each and every one of them anyway.

Aliases are fine I add them all the time and while many of those may now be aliases only, in the past they have not been.

What I mean here is that if someone adds say:
"National Geographic: When Retarded Internet Users Attack"

A week later someone will add:
"National Geographic - When Retarded Internet Users Attack"

And at some point someone will finally add:
"When Retarded Internet Users Attack"

Oh and from time to time six to eight months now it'll get added again
when the british re-air the series with voiceovers by David Tennant:
"BBC: When Retarded Internet Users Attack"

Clearly the duplication can be avoided simply by people naming things correctly. ;)
I remove or rename station prepended entries atleast 3 times a week if not more.

You forgot "National Geographic When Retarded Internet Users Attack" (no dash, no colon),
the version in all caps
the version without capitalization
the German version
the Spanish version
the Dutch version
the series that aired under a gazillion of different names in every English speaking area
the series that premiered on several different channels more or less simultaneously and is a cooperation of all these channels (Channel 4/NatGeo/PBS with sometimes the BBC thrown in for good measure)

I especially like it when they list them as a station they never actually aired on. :p
