I just launched a new site if anyones interested:

Here's a new user contribution site for Audio data and Artwork.

Image

www.TheAudioDB.com

Why
There is a TV, Movie and Games database, I always wanted to complete the set with an Audio Resource. I've been involved in both thetvdb and themoviedb for a few years so guessed it was time for something new. There are already some great sites for Music Data resources but they just didn't do it for me. Musicbrainz and Discogs are too complicated in my opinion, and Allmusic is very commercial. The idea of TheAudioDB.com is to create something as simple and easy to use as possible.

What
We allow Artists, Albums and Tracks(coming soon) to be added. We don't allow Singles, VA releases or Bootlegs to keep things simple. Genre's are based on a Main Genre, then a sub genre. We do allow Studio Produced Albums, Official Live Albums and Live Music DVD's (although this still needs some work).

How?
Just like the other sites, its based on user contributions, Just sign up and start working on the database items. There is an import function from music brainz for new Artists and Albums. Just find out the MusicBrainz ID for the Artist or the release group for the Albums and you can add to TADB with very little effort. Hopefully this will keep the database consistent and easy to use. All users can update specific details for an Artist, Album or Track once its been added. You can also "Love" any item which should produce some nice charts over time. If a particular record is thought to have been completed I guess we will lock it in the fullness of time to prevent abuse.

I strongly encourage all users to upload artwork to http://Fanart.TV before adding any new Artists or Albums, that way we can keep the artwork all in one place. It will be Imported Automatically but cant be done at a later date.

API
Yep fast JSON,all details here. Just PM me on the forums for your api key.

Development
The site is by no means finished and still has a number of bugs and missing features. Its also still quite easy to abuse so be careful please while it gets developed further ;) Any user feature requests either post them here or on the sites forums.

Credits
Massive thanks to fanart.tv and MusicBrainz. Especially Kode and Martijn for the ideas and providing the artwork hosting.

Special TheTVDB.com notes: I helped with both TheTVDB(back in the meedios days) and TheMovieDB(wrote movie-xml.com which spurred TMDB) development in the past so i've learnt a lot over the years. Happy to share the knowledge i've gained over the last few weeks writing this. JSON, Jquery and CSS3 is definitely the future ;)

Will you support audio books? This would be something I would be very interested in.

Basically nope, that's not what the site has been designed for at all.

The idea was to create something as simple as possible as a resource for music albums.

(I would have called it TheMusicDB if I could have got the domain name)

Are there not already quite a few of those, all ready for scraping? http://musicbrainz.org/ is the best, and works really well with the fanart.tv scrapes.
But there is also Last.fm and a few others.
Audio books is a real missed opportunity - there is no audio book database, and it would be something that would be very useful.
I'm not trying to piss on your bonfire, honest! It just seems like a lot of effort to put into something that kind of already exists.

Yeh I based the whole site on MusicBrainz, but I just don't get on with it. Their API is constantly overloaded, the site design looks like it was made 10 years ago and the amount of junk bootleg and live releases on their is incredible.

I do reference the musicbrainz ID just like Fanart.tv so it will work quite well I hope.

There is no reason why I can't leverage the site's code for audio books, but I won't be adding them to this specific site. I might take a look at it in the future. Music videos is another one that could do with an online DB.

The site design does look outdated (not that that really matters for a site like it) and I have had no problems with their API.
Fair enough if there are a lot of bootleg releases (I personally haven't noticed any) but would it not be better to just help out with cleaning it up?
Where did you grab all the info you have on the site?

Artist, Album and Track names come from musicbrainz when a new artist is added. Then the rest of the data is built up in a wiki fashion by our users.

The difference is we only allow Studio Produced CD's (The main ones you would buy in any music store).

Basically its just a policy decision we made to keep things simple. Seems to be working well so far although there have already been requests for Music DVDs and Live albums :D

Haha! Shall I pop over and ask for singles and EP's? I use a lot of those :) still studio produced!
Good luck with the site, let me know if you decide to offer audiobooks
