In other words instead of a nice open database with lots of users contributing and only an occasional asshat
...Nothing can get changed except by a mod after we have a poll open for two weeks? ...

No thanks.

We don't have time to take a vote every time something needs an edit.
You must work for the government. I'm sure there's a Monty Python joke here somewhere.

Things don't get changed by a mod after two weeks, they get changed by the community, without the need for mod intervention to prevent or fix asshat edits. This would give mods more time to do more important work than prevent and fix asshat edits.

I don't work for the government, and if you take a look at Music Brainz you'll see that plenty of edits make it through the edit/vote process without wasting anyone's time :)

Cheers.

But seriously, we don't want it... and I doubt Scott feels like coding it.
He's welcome to correct me if I'm wrong when he gets back from vacation.

I had debated doing it this way in the past, but almost immediately decided it was a bad idea for this site. A couple of reasons why:

  1. It really does become a popularity contest. Even if incorrect changes aren't made immediately, they are still made. I agree with the mods: most issues here arise from people not reading the rules and not even doing a forum search before posting. Even when they are made aware of why we do things a certain way, they complain about them and sometimes vandalize things. Would the majority of our users vandalize content? No, we've proven already that they won't. However, the majority WILL make changes based on their own personal needs rather than our site rules.
  2. You said that you can prevent people from making a denied change again in the future. I say shenanigans. On a site that holds music content it's a little easier, since you can work per-field and more easily track a history of denials for that field. But handling situations where people want a group of episodes reordered requires that you track that entire set. If you try tracking all of the episodes for that season, any time a new episode gets added you allow one more incorrect proposal that will either get voted in (oh fun) or have to be denied by a mod.
  3. People, despite mostly being helpful and friendly people, tend to get militant about their media. This applies doubly to anime, NASCAR, and soap fans, btw. In a popularity based system (as much as you deny it, any system that includes voting IS popularity based), people will tend to be more selfish than helpful unless someone is there telling them that they aren't allowed to do that. We've proven this time and again on this site.

There's a far easier way we'll be handling this eventually on the new site. In a nutshell, we'll do automatic locking per-field/translation after certain criteria is met. We'll also include a moderator queue where people can make a pending change on a locked field, but will have to include sources AND check a box saying that they understand the rules... mods will then either approve or disapprove that change. This history will be available to users. This won't be implemented right when the new site goes live, but the framework is being built to handle it so some variation of what I've described will be implemented eventually.

So in a nutshell, thanks for the suggestion, but no.

I'm quite an impatient person too if I make a change I want to see it appear in the database and ready to be scraped as soon as I enter it. Also I think the majority of the people that use this site do download scene releases so they could easily form a voting majority.

Having been a long time user over many years of musicbrainz I can say that it constantly infuriated me.
So much so that I no longer tag any of my cds with MB ids.

Yes thetvdb has a couple of issues and 'oddities' but at least data is correct, instant and very few series where the community argues and requires locked series.
(I'll shut up now) :)

I personally believe that the community will fuck it up. Leave it to the experts to have final say! I myself made stupid requests when I first started out with the site - it does take a while to get the rules and know how to follow them.

Having said that, having an easier way to submit changes would be much better. Putting a post in the forums seems a bit clunky and time consuming.

Side note - I keep hearing mention of this mysterious 'new site'. What's the status? Will it be out soon? Where can I find more information about the features it will add? Can I help out in anyway?
