Hi,

I asked myself if others are also of the opinion that many episode overviews are just too detailed/long.

I really appreciate users investing so much of their time to update this great database.

But sometimes episode plots are so detailed that I a) don't need to watch the episode anymore or b) am getting bored reading them.
Additionally getting such long plots on media players is a real pain. What I like is just a short overview in a few sentences.

So it would be nice if the input field for plots could be limited to about 500 characters, at least for new plot inputs.

Already planned, although I'd recommend against reading the overviews before watching the episode for the first time, since we have no rules regarding spoilers. We had discussed the actual length in the past and looked at how long most of the overviews were, but I don't think we came to a consensus on the target length. More than likely it'll be 500 or 750 characters, and I'll probably piss off a lot of people when I make that decision. :/

My personal preference is for short, snappy "previews" of the episode in the overview field. One that explain the episode but don't spoil everything about it, wikipedia-style. Limiting the text field may discourage that kind of thing. Then again, that's just my preference and others may prefer it the other way.

It's my preference, too. Fortunately my opinion is really the one that matters, unless enough other owners/mods feel differently (I don't think they care).

Short and snappy sounds good to me. If they need more, then its probably a cartoon that needs to be split anyway

I really hope we do get a limit on overviews. To me overviews should be like the little blurb you'd find in TV guide or on your EPG. When I see overviews like this http://thetvdb.com/?tab=episode&seriesi ... 2398&lid=7 which are basically scene by scene recaps of an episode a piece of me dies. I look to the overview to remind me if I want to watch that particular episode. After reading something like that I may as well not watch the episode.
