I think you misunderstanding what TVDB is. Its not just a program you can run. It will require a very heavy amount of work, several times more than using NFO files.

I don't see it on the main page though and 'tvdb' doesn't bring it up either ...?

I meant the main page of this site. It's the last word in the first paragraph of text when you visit this site. At any rate you've been warned, I really do think it would be far easier to craft nfo files then attempt to use that.

So if I download it and install it - it won't work at all?

Its not something you can download install. You don't understand what a database is or how it works.

What makes you say that? It's not like I haven't installed a whole host of other open source projects that leverage a database before ... what's so different about tvdb that it can't be installed

You seem to be expecting it to be some self-extracting installer that gives you a local version of TheTVDB. That's not what it is at all.
What you would be downloading is a bunch of php files that do nothing on their own. If you want to run a local version of the website you'll also have to install a webserver on your computer that has php and mysql support. Then you'll need to get the latest DB dump as well I'd imagine.

Not to say the above isn't do-able, but you're going to find it a thousand times more troublesome than just using .nfos...

As ManiacB says, thetvdb.com is a web front end for a database. Other people then write utilities, scrapers for XBMC and standalone programs to interface via the API things.
So if you were using this yourself, you'd need to install a webserver, get the code up and running on your system (probably not designed with portability in mind) and then modify existing or write new tools to interact with it for whatever you need.

Thanks for the posts guys - if tvdb works on a standard LAMP server then I will be fine. Of course if there are un-documented settings that are required it will be more of an issue.
