Also unless I misunderstand most of the time only the thumbnail sized versions of these would be used so they should really watch how they put the name on.

Ones like this are kinda hard to see unless using the full sized verison.

Also, this is going to create a lot of duplicates, so before we get to far into this I'm wondering if we might be better off allowing a graphical name to be uploaded so that a program could overlay it automatically on any fanarts for that series.

Take Heroes for example. There is nothing wrong with stuff like these.

Of course they are exact duplicates of the most popular current ones and could easily be created automaticly if we included a spot to upload the graphic for the name.

I totally understand your concern here, I'm really not opposed, but it would have to be more advanced than just an overlay, we'd need a position variable. I'd hate to see a logo just get plastered anywhere on fanart.

Also some people over at xbmc.org are wondering if there is an eta, but I guess it'll be hard to give one if you haven't decided whether you're doing a simple tag, or and advanced image overlaying script.

I'm kinda just waiting till I sort out exactly how we do it. It should be in place sometime within the week though.

We can always do both options as well. Have the option to do an overlay but still allow text images. Although if I do that I think we'd have to be more picky about the text images. Like only allow them if they actually are diffrent from what the overlay would produce.

I'll most likely just add the tag for text images and call it a day for now. Sort out the overlay issue with the new site, it kinda stinks though since that means lots of work would get deleted once the overlay is in place if we do decide to go that way.

I personally think they should be completely separate from Fanart (called something like Wide Poster as they're not meant as backdrops) and even see if we can get them an extra label for XBMC to scan to the library.
This will allow people to use different views in skins without having to entirely re-do their complete posters collection each time.

i think they should definitely be held separately - they're essentially duplicates of existing fanart, albeit with the show logo. pulling down a list of fanart thumbnails suddenly means you could have a fair few to trawl through.

the overlay option's certainly the nicest, with the logo positioning handled by the end-software, although probably not practical given that high res transparent versions would be tough for older shows - saying that, it would also let people use just the logo if they want for their shows.

Only concern with the overlay is the quality that this would produce (do we expect people to upload a nice PNG with alpha transparency?), and the fact it's a lot more code to get working. If we want this overlay option XBMC group will have to code all that in, and as others have said we'll want advanced placement option so the logo doesn't end up over someone's face

Easiest all around would be the proposed new section, and just leave it to the end-users to make images with the logos. It's worked well with banners. XBMC would need minimal mod (they already pull from banners and posters for thumbs, just add this new section), and you guys just have to worry about a new image group that supports language tags -- pretty much duplicating the "banner" section you have now.

I don't like the overlay idea. It would be too hard to get good quality from it. I'm not opposed to the separate section, though. If we did that, we could select a smaller size for the images as well. Something closer to the size of an episode image. Putting them in fanart for now will have to suffice, though.

@szsori If the new section is the goal, do we want to scrap the mods to the fanart section (adding the has logo flag, and a language flag) and just concentrate on the new section? The mods to the fanart section would be so XBMC could displays these on it's own selectively, but if you're for moving to a new section instead this means coding this solution on both ends, and then re-coding for the new section.

The idea being we could still upload to the fanart section for these fanarts-with-logos, just you guys don't have to worry about those flags. Unless you want them there anyway for some reason.
