I suppose Claymore isn't sci-fi. Neither is the Mecha stuff suggested in some of the thread.

That would depend on your definition of sci-fi.. by most standards, mecha fall well within the genre.

Thread necro but I finally got around to watching Macross Frontier and it was very enjoyable.
The space battles were pretty amazing and I liked the story too. To be honest I fonund the Idol stuff a bit weird at first but I got used to it fairly quickly and enjoyed it (although there were a few moments that seemed a bit derpy but oh well). It's my understanding that Music has always been a big part of the Macross franchise.

It was certainly good enough for me to want to give the rest of the Macross Series a go. Might start at the beginning, SDF
