I would argue that some of the best shows in the past 20 years are on right now. New Girl, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Dexter, House, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Mythbusters, Friendship is Magic, Phineas and Ferb, etc. Now, there's obviously horrible ones, but I think we often look back with rose tinted glasses. Some shows were horrible in the past as well, but we tend to only think about the good ones and we tend to remember them all being on at the same time when they were generally spread over a decade or more. My $0.02 for the day.

2 Broke Girls

As much as I try, I just can't get past the horrible writing on this show. I've watched every episode, too, since I think the premise has potential and I think they have good actors. They try putting a punch line after every single bit of dialog. Yes, some of it is funny and yes, it's a comedy. However, the best comedies of all time (M*A*S*H, Cheers, Simpsons, Married With Children, Highway to Heaven, etc) have good stories that are funny by themselves, which leads to more natural punchlines. How I Met Your Mother is a perfect example of this. I give 2 Broke Girls one more season unless their writing changes significantly. Boobs and "I'm a slut", "we were so poor", and "my mom cared so little" one-liners can only carry a show so far.

 Holes

A lot of older shows are extremely good because we can pick them out. How many shows can you pick out from a decade that are good? Now how many from this decade are good?

You will find that there's more now then there were back then because, like music we only remember the best not the bad.

It depends really, these things go in waves. The golden age of British comedy was 1995-2005 as far as I'm concerned, we had The Office, Alan Partridge, Spaced, Brass Eye, Father Ted, Black Books, Look Around You, League of Gentlemen, Nighty Night, Garthe Marenghi and more besides. This last year was very poor, Rev being the only stand out. (Life's Too Short was awful and derivative and a real disappointment.) This year I mostly swopped over to American comedies like Parks & Rec, Always Sunny, Archer, Bored to Death, Community and The League. From a British point of view, American comedy has never been stronger. Other than Sports Night, Seinfeld, King of the Hill, Simpsons, Frasier and Friends, I can't think of any other 90's sitcoms I enjoyed. I pretty much have year round comedies from America now.

Ok, I'll grant you there is some good stuff out there, but it's so buried in crap that it's hard to find. Big Bang Theory is well done, House was good the first season but after that it kinda got boring. Mythbusters... it's ok, I don't go out of my way to see it. I did finally watch some Phineas and Ferb last night, it was on Netflix so I gave it a shot and did something I wasn't expecting... I laughed. It was actually good, not my favorite but I enjoyed watching it. But, stuff like Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, 2 Broke Girls, Californication, that new Teen Wolf wannabe, etc, that crap makes me not want to watch TV at all and I will admit colours my view on modern TV.

Just started watching Hell on Wheels...I find it interesting. Kind of like a PG14 Deadwood.

I keep drifting back and forth between Dawson's Creek and Mythbusters. O.o
